Don’t get us wrong. It’s because we believe that we should offer the most reasonable and honest prices at all times, not just create hype during sale seasons. You’ll see many websites plastered with endless “XX% OFF,” and you can’t even find a single item at its “original price,” even outside sale periods. That’s because many so-called “original prices” were inflated to begin with, the discounted price is actually the true, fair price of the product.
And for many of the brands we carry, there simply is no discounting room at all.
Take Inherent for example, especially their porcelain bowls with solid wood legs, which are the most expensive bowls on our website. Oreo Table 2. We sell the beech wood for $90 and the walnut for $95. You might wonder, is it crazy to sell a pet bowl for almost $100?
But the truth is: we don’t make any profit on this product at all.
Inherent’s official website prices:
Beech wood: 49 USD
Walnut: 55 USD
Currency in USD
A 6 USD difference, but 5 AUD difference by us.
55 USD is already around 85 AUD. Add international freight from Korea (even with distributor discounts), and the landed cost easily exceeds $60.
Our Australian price is $95 with free shipping. After deducting about $10 postage, 10% GST, at least 2% payment processing fees (PayPal 3%, and if it’s unfortunately Afterpay then 5–7%), plus the 5% first-order discount code we offer, plus packaging cost (and a fragile bowl over 1kg needs proper packaging)…
After all of that, there is literally no profit left. If we factor in advertising expenses, we lose money on every bowl sold.
And yes, we could absolutely source knock-offs directly from China factories, change the currency symbol, and sell them at huge margins. But that goes completely against our principles, we are not here to sell cheap junk.
DOG Copenhagen is the same story. All DOG Copenhagen products are air-freighted from Denmark, with full duty and GST paid. Even so, our pricing is very competitive. If you see us a few dollars higher than someone else, remember to check shipping. We offer free shipping over $79, while some stores only offer free shipping over $149 or even $199. Comparing unit prices without looking at the free-shipping threshold is unfair.
Because of our low free-shipping threshold, we lose a lot of money on freight every month. We only recently separated remote-area shipping because the losses became unsustainable. But for major cities, everything except litter boxes is still free shipping.
So these products genuinely have NO room for discounts. The prices you normally see are already the best prices we can offer.
Many products are expensive not because we overprice them, but because they’re inherently expensive to begin with.
That’s why we really dislike Black Friday and similar sale seasons. We don’t play games, we don’t artificially inflate prices just to apply meaningless discounts later. Like we said at the beginning: we believe in offering the most reasonable and honest price all year round.
Buy something when you need it, skip it if you don’t. There’s no need to wait for a specific date.
